Today's Scripture:
Whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
Romans 15:4
"At Lidia's, comfort food comes from a warm, cast-iron skillet," the article advertised. Lidia's, a restaurant located in scattered cities in the United States, offers comfort cooking from an Italian perspective. Most women have some sort of favorite comfort food: chocolate, fries, apple pie, macaroni, fried chicken, or even, as Lidia's offers, favorite recipes their moms used to cook for them, such as lasagna or ravioli. Most comfort foods tend not to be so great as far as calories or fat grams go, but they sure can give an emotional boost.
Of course, eating isn't the outlet for every woman when she's blue. Some women go to "comfort places" - a favorite store, a library, a coffee shop, a park or that favorite spot on the couch in front of the TV. Other women read or reread books from their favorite author or watch a chick flick or as my coworkers at the people plant call the soaps...go watch your "stories". Still others get together with good friends or call them on the phone to spill out hopes and needs. And many women do still turn to the Bible for comfort.
The Bible is referred to as "food" for its readers' spirits and souls.
Now that's real comfort food.
Romans 15:4 reminds readers that the Bible was given to you for your benefit. The Bible is God's love letter to you. You can learn and receive hope through reading the words of the Bible - words of encouragement, hope, companionship, and advice for your life - even for those times when you feel like singing the blues.
Selah people' and friends ingest the Bible. Read it, memorize it, and study it, read it like a love letter over and over again and you'll find plenty of comfort for your own soul - comfort you won't have to go to you favorite restaurant for or your refrigerator to get.
"May each of grow in faith and not in girth as we consume the meal of God's word that is set before us this day and in the days and weeks to come."
