Today's Scripture:
You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.
Ephesian 5:8
Enter most checkout lines, and you'll see them rimmed with gossip magazines and tabloid newspapers. Few people can resist the impulse to satisfy their curiosity. It's almost as if the tabloids reach out and grab you with their sensational headlines: "Jesus Is Back"; "Elvis Alive in the CIA!"; "98-Year-Old Mummy Gives Birth to Twins!"The tabloids and the surrounding magazines claim to expose the most personal and sometimes bizarre details of the lives of famous people. Impulse shoppers and tabloid fans purchase millions of copies a month. No one in public life is safe from the offensive sensationalism of these publications.
It seems as if this curiosity about others' lives has always been the trait of humanity. If exploitative presses had been in the Garden of Eden, papers would have announced "Adam and Eve on the Verge of Breakup!"; "Eve Eats the Apple!"; "A Swinging Night in the Serpent's Cove!"
The more dramatic the details, the more people want to hear. For some reason, humans love to pass along juicy tidbits.
Women and Men alike are challenged to rise above the temptation to absorb and pass along juicy tidbits.
Set your sights in a new direction. Instead of discussing the latest immoral actions or wicked behavior of others in your community, or the hate filled stage interruption of Taylor Swift by Kanye West during the music awards, train yourself instead to focus on the positive elements in life and God's goodness.
Selah people' and friends accept the challenge to avoid the tabloid perspective of life. When it comes to focusing on wickedness and immorality, go ahead, choose the high road. Set you mind with a new attitude on something else.
"May you and I have a new perspective beyond the magazine rack at our local grocery store!"
