The Sweet Scent of Worship ~ August 1, 2009

What are going to offer God from your heart?

Today's Scripture:

Mary brought in a pint of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She poured the perfume on Jesus' feet, and then she wiped his feet with her hair. And the sweet smell from the perfume filled the whole house.

John 12:3

Imagine that you're at a home Bible study. All of a sudden, a classy, if not wealthy, woman drops to her knees and washes the Bible study leader's feet with Clive Christian #1, one of the world's most expensive perfumes.

That act would stay in your memory and be a conversation topic for a long time. And that's the reaction people had when Mary anointed Jesus's feet. Actually, several shocking things occurred. The woman' expensive perfume was probably a treasure she'd hoarded. In a culture where women generally acted discreetly around men, she made a spectacle of herself. And in her culture, the foot was considered a rude, nearly unmentionable part of the body. But Mary not only poured her expensive perfume on Jesus's feet, she also used her hair - considered a woman's glory - to wipe his feet.

Why did Mary act in such an unorthodox manner? She wanted to give Jesus her best possession and the most honored part of herself. She wanted to worship him, even though it meant sacrifice.

Real power comes through worship. Through worship, you give God honor.

And just as Mary's perfume was a sweet fragrance wafting in the air, your worship is a delectable fragrance to God. By her actions, Mary showed the truest and greatest gift any woman can offer God: worship. Mary's actions sprang from heart, and John 12:3 is a message of God's greatest desire and a woman's greatest gift to him in one stop.

Selah people' and friends joyous and sacrificial worship comes in many forms. Whatever your gift, give it to God, and let the fragrance of worship refresh him and strengthen your heart.

"May each of us identify what we need to do to truly worship God each day."
