August 9, 2009 ~ "You Follow Me"

Can you resist the temptation of speaking about other people's problems?

Today's Scripture:

Jesus answered, "If I want him to live until I come back, that is not your business. You follow me."

John 21:22

When Cheri learned that she was being laid off, she couldn't resist blurting out, "What about Pat?" Pat was a the same seniority level and position in the department. "Is Pat's position getting eliminated too?" Let's just talk about you for right now, Cheri," her boss smoothly replied.

It is human nature for people to want to compare their plights to those of others. John 21:22 is no exception. Jesus had appeared to several of his disciples, including Peter - it was probably the first time the two had talked since he died and rose. In their conversation, Peter renewed his commitment to his leader. Then Jesus told Peter the big scoop - indicating how Peter would eventually die. You'd think Peter might have a few questions or want to hear more details. Instead, Peter took a look around him and said, "So what about John? Is he going to face the same kind of stuff I face?" That's when Jesus said, "Don't worry about him. You follow me."

People tend to get sidetracked by looking at others. Sometimes they want to make sure no one gets better treatment. They're so busy looking into other people's business with things like, "God, see the wrong stuff he or she did? What are you going to do about that, God?"

When a person is watching and worrying about someone Else's relationship with God, chances are that they are not taking the time to enjoy their own relationship with God.

As with Peter and John, God tells you to follow the path he has created for you - no matter what happens to other people. You are not responsible for them; you are responsible for only yourself.

Selah people' and friends the next time you're tempted to ask, "But what about...," bite your tongue and take the time to ask God how your relationship with Him can improve.

"Join me today in refocusing our eyes upon God and what he can do in our lives and helping fix our problems, don't sit around trying to focus on OPP (other people's problems)."
