Nuclear Fuel Rods Fully Exposed at Japan ReactorJapan's unfolding nuclear-power crisis deepened Monday, with a new explosion and accelerated overheating at one reactor in Fukushima and the start of cooling troubles at another. Nuclear fuel rods at a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear reactor are now fully exposed, Jiji news agency said, quoting the plant's operator, Tokyo Eletcric Power Co. The report referred to the Fukushima Daiichi complex's No.2 reactor, where levels of water coolant around the reactor core had been reported as falling earlier in the day. The Jiji report said a meltdown of the fuel rods could not be ruled out. A meltdown raises the risk of damage to the reactor vessel and a possible radioactive leak, experts say. Reports are mixed as live feed from Japan is monitored - with one report being that the vessel that contains the fuel rods is not damaged, although water levels have dropped precipitously inside the stricken reactor, which leaves the fuel rods exposed. Exposed fuel rods are not an issue that atomic energy scientists have had to deal with in the past, and the nature of all worrisome developments are unknown. If a large radiation leak occurs, winds across Japan would carry most out to sea. Typical seasonal wind trajectories across the Pacific would tend to dissipate the amounts of radioactivity that is airborne. However, radioactive particles would take a direct path toward the U.S. West Coast cities, moving at a speed of roughly 20 miles per hour, reaching cities such as Anchorage in 7 days, Honolulu in 8, Seattle in 10 and Los Angles in 11 according to AccuWeather.com. Meanwhile the USS Ronald Reagan and other ships in the 7th Fleet have moved away from the Japan coastal waters. Seventeen U.S. Navy crew members have already been contaminated with low-levels of radiation, officials said today. They are their helicopters have been undergoing decontamination procedures. The military noted that the level of contamination was low, and the ship movements are precautionary. Internationally, stock markets are noting the 6% decline in the Japanese exchange. The central bank injected a record amount into money markets in attempts to stabilize the yen. (Japan is the second largest holder of U.S. debt and its internal losses may have an impact.) Nations that have a heavy reliance upon nuclear energy are assessing their own plants' safety measures. Aftershocks continue, and a reported second tsunami proved to be unfounded. Food, water and fuel are running short in some parts of Japan, and huge swathes of the country remain without power in winter conditions (Sources: Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Pacific News, AccuWeather, NY Daily News, BBC Live, Fox News, CNN)) As the Lord leads, please pray now:
