May 4th, 2011 ~ Do we rejoice?

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE:

"Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, lest the Lord see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him."

Proverbs 24:17

TODAY’S WORD:

The pictures of people dancing in the streets are all over the web and the culture that we live in makes rejoicing seem like the proper thing to do in response to the news.  But how should Christians react to this news. Even before I witnessed President Obama’s confirmation of Bin Laden’s death it was a scene played out at places across the country, people had gathered in spontaneous rejoicing with flags raised outside the White House and a Ground Zero. Americans openly cheering bin Laden's death. I have had many come and seek council or my opinion on this topic so I share some thoughts I’ve gathered the last several days. You may disagree

Americans in general, as well as many other nations, are rejoicing over the death of the proclaimed archenemy’ of all western civilization and what the USA stands for, Osama Bin Laden.  He is credited and has been captured on video claiming victory for his masterminding the destruction of the twin towers in New York City, the Pentagon and many other terrorist-related crimes.  He has been responsible for the death of thousands of men, women and children both American and in his own country thousands of Muslims killed by his order.

He has been the focus of a more than ten year intensive search in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan by our American men and women of our armed forces and the international security forces. We are told that he and one of his sons are dead and buried at sea. They now weigh the cost of releasing video and photos to give closure to the ones can’t believe without seeing with their own eyes.

Many Christians today are feeling an internal conflict in dealing with the death of Osama bin Laden - relief that he dead but hesitant to celebrate the death of another human being.

I have seen many who seek advice on feeling torn and unsure of how to process this killing of such an evil person. They share how they feel bad about the thought of celebrating someone's death and people, I think, are somewhat fearful of voicing that to friends and co-workers as they do not want to come across unpatriotic.

Part of the worry is that for some they may feel celebration for this death are invalid because they didn't lose anyone personally on 9/11 or did not lose a family member or friend in combat.

As a pastor and active community leader, I understand it's a nationalistic response, and as an American I can understand that people would celebrate both the justice and the revenge from 9/11. As a Christian I cannot understand the celebration of another's execution. My identity is Christian first and American second, and I think there are many more people who see it reversed or don't see the difference.

Not to say that bin Laden shouldn't have been killed but rest assured we have much brokenness in our world and jubilation of violence is really sad.

I read this week of one point of view shared by Pastor John Robertson whom has the dual view of being a soldier and a religious leader. He was a chaplain deployed in Iraq in 2009 and 2010.

"I'm always saddened when another human being dies, but when someone chooses the path of murder and justice is served, it's justice. It doesn't make me celebrate, it doesn't make me pleased, but in order to have peace, we have to have justice to deal with those that take life," he said. "As a citizen, as a soldier, I am pleased with the mission and in that aspect a degree of justice was served, but it doesn't mean I have to celebrate it openly in order to believe that the mission was successful and justice was accomplished."

I agree with my Christian brother and I know our congregation prays each week for America, our troops and for the leadership, and I would say that prayer was answered in one respect.

For one, we're always sad when someone who we're pretty sure doesn't believe in Jesus as their savior (dies), because if the person is an unbeliever, then according to what the Bible says, they're going to hell," he said. "From an American standpoint, we rejoice that God has allowed us to have this victory. But my ultimate concern as a Christian, as a father and as a Pastor and Christian leader is the same that is God's ultimate concern which is for people's souls.

The U.S. government has the duty to protect its people and God gives the government the right to do that, so we thank God for protecting us and keeping us safe.

"We pray for those who may have been killed and pray that people who are killed in the incident were believers and go to heaven. Or, if they weren't believers that God would use this as an opportunity to lead others to Jesus as their savior," he said.

Pastor Tom Countryman of Portage United Methodist Church said he takes no pleasure in the death but can't help but wonder if the world is better off.

"We're talking about things that as human beings are too big to deal with, so we ask God to carry us through the tragedy, grief and horror of what people do to us and sometimes what it seems to be what we do in response," he said.

"For me, for better or for worse, I don't feel badly.

I don't rejoice in the death of Osama, but when I think about that reality and just all the people trying to survive in the wake of horrors he caused, it's overwhelming, and I don't feel competent (to judge) and throw myself on the mercy of God."

During church services they had on Monday and Tuesday, Countryman led his members in a song he felt spoke to the issue.

“One day at a time, sweet Jesus,” he sang.

So where does Bin Laden’s soul stand today?

Osama Bin Laden was a professing Muslim and Muslims do not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ.  They believe that he existed in the humanity and that he was a good teacher or Rabbi.  But for the Muslim, the story of Jesus Christ ends there.  There is no faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross and therefore there is no salvation for them according to the Bible God’s Holy Word.  Christians (those who believe in the words of the Bible) understand that those who die without Christ will spend eternity in hell.

I always try to share salvation in a form that my children can understand…ABC’s if you will Accept that Jesus is our Savior, Believe that He died so that we may be forgiven and have everlasting life and finally Confess our sins and repent.

Do we feel remorse for this lost Soul?

There may be a sense of justice felt at the execution of Osama Bin Laden and that is okay. Christians should be careful in how they view the fall of an enemy as Proverbs 24:17 warns us:  "Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles, lest the Lord see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him."

The Bible teaches that those who live by the sword will die by the sword; but there should also be a somber sense of remorse that another soul is entering hell for eternity.

Christians are sinners that have been saved by Grace – not by their own good works.  In other words, the old adage should come to mind for every professing believer when they look at the life and death of Osama Bin Laden:

“There but for the grace of God, go I.”

 What is our Christian duty?

Selah people’ and friends the Bible teaches that Christians are to love the Lord their God with all the heart, soul, mind and strength, and their neighbor as themselves. The Bible then teaches that our neighbor is everyone.  This doesn’t mean that Christians are allow terrorist or other to walk all over us like door mats to be, but it does place the emphasis on living a life that shows grace and mercy more than hate and condemnation.  We as Christians should focus on leading unbelievers to the Savior, Jesus Christ; that’s where we find our true reason for rejoicing. I pray that we can teach this to our children as well as those children touched by our Christian men and women who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq throughout this war. Perhaps one day when we are with our Lord He will share all that we cannot understand at this time.

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

“Heavenly Father, we prayerfully come to you for wisdom and guidance in all things that we have trouble understanding. We know you have called us to be your Disciples and to minister the Gospel to all the world. We thank you for your protection to those who carried out an assigned mission and just ask that in all things your will be done. Help us to instruct and witness to the believers, unbelievers and our children in a manner that honors you and does not bring others down.  In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

May 3, 2011 ~ Accept God’s Plan

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

" 'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future' "

Jeremiah 29:11

TODAY'S WORD:

No matter what may be happening today, God has good things in store for your future! It may not be easy to see now, but God has already lined up a new beginning, new friendships and new opportunities for you.

Maybe you've experienced some setbacks, but don't make the mistake of expecting the same for your future. Instead, accept God's good plan for your life by declaring His truth. As believers, our attitude should be, "Even though the economy is down, I'm not worried. I know God is going before me, and He has promised He will make rivers in the desert." Or, "The medical report may not look good, but I have another report that says God is restoring health unto me. I believe God has already released healing, health and victory in my future." Or, you may have a child who is not on the right course. In the natural, it seems impossible. But our report should be...

"I know God can do the impossible!"

Selah people' and friends today, be encouraged and don't give up on your tomorrows. Accept and believe in the good plan God has for you — a plan filled with hope, purpose, blessing and increase in every area of your life!

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Father in heaven, thank You for giving me hope and a future. Thank You for loving me. Thank You for choosing me. Thank You for delighting in me. I invite You to renew my heart and mind to the good plans You have for me. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

May 2nd, 2011 ~ Accelerate!

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

"My times are in Your hand..."

Psalm 31:15

TODAY'S WORD:

One thing I've learned is that God doesn't always work on our timetable. In fact, He rarely does. But in a single moment, God can change your life! All throughout Scripture, we see examples of how God was working behind the scenes and instantly turned things around for His people. Scripture tells us He is the same yesterday, today and forever which means He can instantly turn things around for you, too!

You may be going through some difficulty today, but be encouraged because your times are in God's hands. He wants to accelerate things in your favor. He wants to take you further than you dreamed possible and work in your life in ways beyond what you have ever imagined.

Let this truth sink down into your heart today. Resist discouragement by speaking His Word over your future. Keep standing. Keep hoping; keep believing because He is working behind the scenes. He's going to accelerate your times and lead you into the life of victory He has for you!

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Father God, today I humbly come before You giving You all that I am. I trust that my times are in Your hands. I trust that You are working things out in my favor. I set my focus on You knowing that You are working things out for my good. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

April 29, 2011 ~ Just Agree with God!

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

"As it is written: 'I have made you a father of many nations.' He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed — the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not"

Romans 4:17

TODAY'S WORD:

Twenty years before Abraham ever had a child, God said to him, "Abraham, I have made you a father of many nations." Notice God spoke to him like it had already happened, in the past tense. I'm sure Abraham thought, "God, you must have made a mistake. I'm not a father. I don't even have one child." Abraham could have talked himself out of it; but instead, he chose to believe.

Today, as you read these words you may be thinking, "Patrick, I'm not blessed. I'm not confident. I'm not healthy. I'm not favored." But when God says you're blessed, don't try to figure it out. Just agree with God and say, "I am blessed." When God calls you prosperous, don't go check your bank account. Don't go look at the stock report. Just agree with God and say, "I am prosperous." Things may look impossible. That's all right. That's the way things looked for Abraham. But sure enough, God's promises came to pass, and he became the father of many nations.

Selah people' and friends remember, when you agree with God, you are positioning yourself for a miracle. You are activating His truth in your life. When things look difficult, don't agree with your circumstances, agree with His promises because He is faithful, and He will complete what He's started in your life!

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Heavenly Father, I bless You and thank You for Your goodness and faithfulness in my life. I receive Your promises as truth, no matter what is going on around me. Fill me with joy and peace as I hold fast to Your promises for me. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

April 27, 2011 ~ Already Blessed!

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ"

Ephesians 1:3

TODAY'S WORD:

God has blessed you! Past tense — He's already done it! Now, you may not feel blessed, you may not look blessed; in fact, all the circumstances may tell you that you're not blessed. But you've got to be bold enough to say, "No, I see it right here in God's Word — I am blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ!"

What does it mean to be blessed? It means that you are supernaturally empowered to do whatever God has called you to do; to be whoever God has called you to be; and to have whatever God has called you to have. God's blessing is His empowerment! The key is this: you have to believe it in order to receive it. You can't walk around in guilt and condemnation from the past thinking you can't do anything right and expect to keep moving forward.

Selah people' and friends you have to shake off those old mindsets by declaring God's truth over your life. Truth sets you free. When you speak God's truth that you are blessed, you will be free to believe it and free to receive it! Today, take hold of what belongs to you. When God gives us reminders through a kind word from a friend, family member or even a stranger remember you are blessed. If you see rainbows in the sky remember His blessing for you. Approach each day with an attitude of faith and victory knowing that you are already blessed!

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Father God, thank You for blessing me with everything I need to be successful in this life. I receive Your Word today which is truth and life to my soul. Help me keep my mind stayed on You as I meditate on Your goodness. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

April 26, 2011 ~ Seeing Potential in Others...

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

"...Keep each other's spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out"

Ephesians 6:18

TODAY'S WORD:

It's easy to be someone's friend when they've got it all together, when they're walking in blessing and prosperity. Anybody can believe in people after they're successful, after they graduate, after they're promoted, after they get their big break. But, people need our support the most before they get their breakthrough. They need us to look past their faults and failures and see their potential. At the close of every worship service we share the word on our screen "Come as you are…leave better". We need to learn as Christian brothers and sister to truly be there for one another.

Most times, people just need a little "push" of encouragement to keep them moving forward. We should always put ourselves in the other person's shoes and see things from their perspective. You may have some good advice that could save them a lot of heartache and pain. Don't keep it to yourself. Pick up the phone. Help them win. Maybe you excelled in a college course that they're struggling in. Don't sit back and think, "Too bad. They've got to learn it the hard way." No, you are the hands and feet of Jesus. When you help others rise higher, you are fulfilling His mission.

Selah people' and friends today, share your love, support and encouragement. Invest life in others, see their potential, and together, you'll rise higher into the blessing God has for you!

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Father God, thank You for giving me influence with the people in my life. Thank You for equipping me to help others rise higher. Reveal to me the potential You have deposited in the people around me and show me ways to help them so we can win at life together. In Jesus' Name. Amen."

April 25, 2011 ~ Let God Arise...

TODAY'S SCRIPTURE:

"Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered..."

Psalm 68:1

TODAY'S WORD:

Let me ask you today, what are you letting arise in your life? In other words, what are you focusing your words, energy and thoughts on? You might say, "Oh, Patrick, it's just so hard right now. I've lost some money." "My health doesn't look good." "Somebody walked out on me, my friends have all but forsaken me." No, you're focusing on the wrong things. You're letting defeat, discouragement and self-pity rise up. Why don't you turn that around and say, "God is still in control. Somebody may have walked out on me, but I know God is going to bring me somebody better." "I may be hurting right now, but I know God is the restorer of my soul." "I may have lost money in the stock market, or be in some other kind of financial demand, or a relationship that feels like it is coming up short in all ways possible but I'm not worried. I know God is my provider. He is supplying all of my needs. He is fighting my battles and mending all of my fences."

Selah people' and friends when you start giving God glory and letting Him arise in your life, you can't stay defeated. Your enemies will be scattered! They'll tremble at your words of faith. Begin right now by declaring God's goodness in your life and let Him arise so that you can move forward in the victory He has for you.

OUR PRAYER FOR TODAY:

"Father in heaven, I repent right now for allowing any negative, self-defeating thoughts or attitudes rise up in my life. You alone are my God, and I put my trust in You. I bless You today and always and choose to look for the good things You have for me. In Jesus' Name. Amen."
